Today AMD announced that Samsung Electronics will enter a multi year license for AMD’s Radeon graphics technologies. Samsung will integrate custom graphics technologies based on the recently announced, highly scalable RDNA graphics architecture into its future System-on-Chips for mobile applications.
These chips will contain AMD’s ultra low power, high performance mobile graphics technology. As part of the partnership, Samsung will license AMD graphics IP and will focus on advanced graphics technologies and solutions. AMD will also receive license fees and royalties.
Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO“Adoption of our Radeon graphics technologies across the PC, game console, cloud and HPC markets has grown significantly and we are thrilled to now partner with industry leader Samsung to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market,”
History repeats itself
After the sale of (then) ATI’s mobile graphics division to Qualcomm in 2009, AMD now returns to low power mobile graphics with this new licensing deal.
